First transplantation after use of EXCOR® Active

With only 9 weeks, Ben is diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy. A donor heart is his only chance to live on. In the beginning, it is possible to stabilize Ben’s condition with the help of medication. He can even go home while waiting for a donor heart. However, a cholecystitis three month later brings him back to hospital. As his condition worsens increasingly, the only chance to survive is the implantation of an EXCOR Pediatric to support his left ventricle. As the youngest patient worldwide, Ben gets the new mobile driving unit EXCOR Active and therefore, a bit more freedom. Especially in times of COVID-19 this means a huge relief for all involved.

In June 2020, his parents get the message they have been waiting for so long – a donor heart for Ben is available and Ben gets the first EXCOR Active patient, who is successfully transplanted.
