Day of Pediatric Heart Patients

In Germany, May 5 is dedicated to children with heart disease. We would like to use the Day of Pediatric Heart Patients to draw attention to children who are born with a single-ventricle heart.

These children have to undergo a series of operations. The last surgery is the so-called Fontan operation named after the French heart surgeon and pioneer Prof. Francis Fontan. Although this operation is live saving, it remains a palliation.

These patients experience a worsening of their heart and other organ function over time, a so called failing of their Fontan circulation. Their health condition deteriorates so badly that they are in desperate need of a donor heart. To survive the often very long waiting times, we have developed a bridging solution specifically for these patients.
