Australia supports the 100th patient worldwide on Berlin Heart’s new EXCOR Active!

Our new, small, smart, and agile EXCOR® Active is a mobile drive system for artificial hearts and was developed especially for children with severe heart failure.

As small as hand luggage and with a minimum battery runtime of 6.5 hours, the EXCOR® Active offers children with heart disease a better quality of life with much more mobility and freedom.

The first EXCOR® Active in Australia was introduced to Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne in March 2022 and so far, 9 patients have been treated at this center using the EXCOR® Active driver. The 100th EXCOR® Active successfully supported a patient who had developed ventricular dysfunction following a double switch procedure for CCTGA. The small but strong patient is making great progress and is clinically doing well.

The Cardiology Nurse Manager and Heart Failure Nurse Practitioner at the Cardiology Department, Caitlin Elliott said: “The new device is far less restrictive, due to the longer battery life, which allows families more time away from the bedside. This makes a big difference for the families and patients. Our experience with the EXCOR® Active driver has been very smooth and I find the logfile analyses (carried out by Berlin Heart clinical staff) very helpful, clinically.“
Caitlin Elliott, who is in constant contact with her patients, ensures patient safety and maintains close contact and patient care also said “Overall, the experience with the new driver for our team, the bedside nurses and the families, has been fantastic!”
Since 2008 over 60 Berlin Heart EXCOR® VAD systems have been implanted at The Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.

The entire Berlin Heart team is very happy and proud of this milestone. It is our goal to make EXCOR® Active available to even more patients around the world in 2023!
